Vista Battery Manufacturing Gains a New Partnership

American Lithium Energy and Sylvatex outline a phased materials-testing collaboration

Vista Battery Manufacturing Gains a New Partnership

American Lithium Energy’s Vista manufacturing operation has a new partnership to watch. On October 21, Sylvatex announced a nonbinding agreement to evaluate its domestically produced lithium iron phosphate cathode materials for possible use in the battery maker’s cells. The development connects materials research with local manufacturing capacity, while remaining an evaluation effort rather than a completed commercial supply contract.

The proposed three-phase program moves from research-line qualification toward pilot engineering and testing under conditions representative of commercial manufacturing. It follows the October opening of ALE’s expanded Vista factory, which grew from 23,000 to 82,000 square feet. The Energy Commission says more than $13 million in grants supported the expansion and related battery work.

For local readers, the significance is a potential link between domestic battery materials and the company’s existing production capabilities. The agreement does not promise a hiring total, production increase or completion date. The state reported 100 employees across San Diego County at the factory opening, not at one Vista building alone. Follow American Lithium Energy and its partner for demonstrated results, qualification milestones and any later commercial announcements as the technical work develops. The next milestones to watch are successful material testing and any announced supply agreement, rather than assuming that the evaluation has already produced sales.

Vista’s Bobier Elementary Shows What a Campus Can Become

Vista’s Bobier Elementary offers a local look at how a rebuilt school can support daily learning. Its October 24 community open house was scheduled to introduce families to the district’s campus of the future. That event date has passed, but the school’s flexible spaces, accessibility features and energy planning remain the continuing story at 220 West Bobier Drive.

The district’s project overview emphasizes sustainability, flexibility, student-centered design and community use. It lists 32 dedicated classrooms and more than 84,000 square feet of interior space. The all-electric design includes solar generation and battery backup intended to offset up to 90% of energy use; that is a design target, not a verified measure of actual performance. Outdoor learning areas extend the classroom setting.

The district’s public announcement also highlights recreation spaces designed for children of different abilities to participate together. For parents, the next step is to ask practical questions about access, school routines and individual needs. The past open house does not authorize unscheduled campus visits. Use Bobier’s current school channels for visitor procedures and family information as students and staff make the new campus part of everyday life. Parents with individual access questions can contact the school before a visit and discuss how the available spaces support their child’s daily school routine.

Carlsbad’s Monroe Street Pool Prepares for a Fresh Start

Carlsbad’s Monroe Street Pool is scheduled to reopen Tuesday, November 3, at 6 a.m., following a major renovation and expansion. The city marked completion with an October 29 ribbon-cutting. Its announced reopening offers swimmers a fresh start at a facility that has served the community for more than four decades. Check the city’s latest notice before making a first visit.

The larger pool has 50% more lanes, alongside an expanded deck, additional shade, bleacher seating, updated locker rooms and new family restrooms. Outdoor showers, deck lockers, parking improvements and upgraded equipment round out the work. The city reports completing the project for approximately $21 million. Some limited finishing work may continue after reopening without affecting use of the reopened facility.

An updated aquatic membership will cover both Monroe Street Pool and Alga Norte Aquatic Center. Existing Alga Norte monthly or quarterly members need no action; former Monroe passholders can purchase the new combined pass. Drop-in passes are sold in person. Review the city’s announcement and current facility information for schedules, pass details and access questions before packing your swim bag. Before leaving, confirm the session you want, current admission charges and any reopening notices so your first swim fits comfortably into the day.

Vista Students Bring Mexican Dance Traditions Into Their Learning
🔥 Trending

Classical Academy Vista students recently completed a six-week Ballet Folklórico program through a partnership with Tierra Caliente Academy of Arts. The school’s October 15 report says professional instructor Genoveva Gomez led students in grades K–8 as they explored traditional Mexican dances, music and cultural heritage.

The program concluded with the students’ first folklórico performances during a Día de Los Muertos celebration. This is a completed school learning experience, rather than a new event listing. It also offers a local example of specialist arts instruction complementing the broader enrichment opportunities described on the Vista campus page, where families can learn about current programs and ask what is available for their children. The school’s report does not announce another six-week session or open registration. Parents should ask directly about future dance opportunities and how enrichment fits their child’s current learning program. The distinction keeps this good-news story separate from an invitation to an upcoming performance.

Tierra Caliente Academy of Arts is a Vista-based nonprofit involved in cultural-arts education and youth development. Families interested in future opportunities should confirm current classes, age groups, locations and fees directly with the organization. For questions about school activities, Classical Academy Vista lists 760-330-9800. The encouraging news is the partnership itself: local teaching talent helping students connect performance with cultural learning.

Carlsbad’s Veterans Memorial Park is moving through its early construction stages near Faraday Avenue and Cannon Road. The city’s September update reported grading underway at the 93.7-acre site, planned as Carlsbad’s largest community park. The official project overview outlines spaces for recreation, gathering and remembrance.

Planned features include a Veterans Memorial Plaza, trails, viewpoints, picnic areas, playgrounds, fitness spaces, a bike park and public art. More than half the site will remain protected habitat. The city’s construction update also explains that nearby residents may notice equipment, truck traffic, noise, dust and temporary traffic effects. The future park is not yet open to visitors. Published guidance says construction schedules can change with weather, field conditions and utility coordination. Residents can subscribe to project notices rather than rely on an older description of access, and should stay outside work areas while the future recreation and memorial spaces take shape.

Construction started in summer 2026 and is expected to take approximately two years; no exact opening date is promised. Typical published work hours are 7 a.m.–4 p.m. weekdays, excluding federal holidays, with schedules subject to change. Follow city updates and current signs for access information, and keep the future trails and amenities on your list for a later visit.

Oceanside READS Gets $76,128 to Keep Adult Learning Growing
🔥 Trending

Oceanside’s adult learners have continuing support close to home. The city received $76,128 from the California State Library for adult and family literacy services in fiscal year 2026–27, with the October 7 council record listing the grant item as approved. The funding supports the work of Oceanside READS, an established public-library program.

During the previous year, READS served 111 learners through nearly 1,000 individual and group sessions, supported by 43 volunteers and library staff. Its free services include tutoring, English conversation practice, accessible reading materials and computer-based learning. Adults can ask about learning support based on their own goals and the program’s current availability; no particular class schedule or outcome is promised. The grant report separates adult and family literacy funding from the city’s continuing support for English-language services, so the award should be understood as one part of the program’s broader support system. Staff can explain which learning options are currently available.

Interested learners and prospective volunteers can call 760-435-5680 or email READS@oceansideca.org. The library provides free tutor training and asks volunteers to commit to twice-weekly tutoring for at least six months. For someone considering a new learning goal, a conversation with READS staff is a practical place to begin.

Oceanside Parking Alert: October 21–22 Street Work

Oceanside residents and businesses in the signed work area should prepare for temporary parking restrictions on Wednesday, October 21, and Thursday, October 22, 2026. The neighborhood notice supplied to North County Buzz lists 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Affected street names and block limits remain unconfirmed for this draft, so this should not be treated as a citywide restriction.

Read the complete temporary sign near your vehicle and move out of the restricted area before the posted start time. Notify visitors, employees, caregivers and delivery drivers who may use the curb. Check all rules at an alternative parking space, including time limits, permits and street-sweeping restrictions. If you need to use your driveway during the work window, ask the project contact about access beforehand. Vehicles in properly posted tow-away areas may be removed; do not count on a warning.

Before returning after 4 p.m., check signs, barriers and crew instructions. The listed end time does not guarantee that every lane or driveway immediately reopens. For street-maintenance questions, the city's information lists (760) 435-4500. My Oceanside can be used for pothole reports, while project schedules should be confirmed with the contact on the work notice. Planning parking today can help avoid a disruption tomorrow.

Oceanside Celebrates 25 Years of Día de los Muertos

Oceanside's Día de los Muertos festival celebrates its 25th year on Sunday, October 25, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event takes place downtown around Pier View Way and surrounding blocks near City Hall. Family and community altars, traditional entertainment, food and retail booths give residents a chance to celebrate culture while remembering loved ones. Details.

The organizer lists children's activities, a Catrina contest and car-related displays, with a 2026 map and entertainment schedule available on its activities page. Marigolds from Mellano Flowers are highlighted in the altar tradition. Visitors should give memorial displays space and ask before photographing people or personal items closely. Anyone interested in building an altar should act quickly: the listed application deadline is October 22, with no fee to create an altar and equipment supplied by participants. Explore more.

Plan arrival before heading downtown. The festival recommends public transportation because parking is limited; drivers can use 300 North Coast Highway as a reference and should follow all posted restrictions. Be ready to walk several blocks. Contact the organizer with questions about admission or participation costs, and allow separately for food and purchases. This is Oceanside's celebration, distinct from Vista's earlier event. Plan your visit.

The company emphasizes scratch preparation, including Japanese-style milk buns baked each morning, house-ground beef blends, house-made cheese and sauces, and pastry made in-house. The opening offers diners a chance to explore the menu and learn more about the preparation behind a familiar favorite. The Oceanside location lists an outdoor patio, private dining and a production kitchen alongside its dining service. Explore more.

Tacos in Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista: A North County Taco Guide

Tacos in Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista: A North County Taco Guide

National Taco Day came and went earlier this month, but it's Tuesday, and in North County that's all the excuse anyone needs. Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista sit a short drive apart, yet each city's taco scene has its own personality, from beach-town taquerias with beer on tap to family counters that have fed the neighborhood for decades. Here's where to point your next taco run, sorted by craving.

Oceanside

For tacos with a personality. Sancho's Tacos at 400 Mission Ave. is hard to miss in downtown Oceanside. The Southern California mini-chain gives its tacos tongue-in-cheek names: the tri-tip "O.G.," the carnitas "Federale" and the grilled chicken "Yard Bird." Most come dressed in its secret, slightly sweet Chubbie sauce. Seafood fans should try the beer-battered fish and shrimp "Carnal" tacos, and a full bar makes it an easy group stop.

For the classic San Diego taco-shop lane. Valerie's Taco Shop at 3613 Ocean Ranch Blvd. covers the essentials: adobada, carnitas, lengua, cabeza, fried fish and rolled tacos, plus carne asada fries and burritos for the table. Online ordering opens at 6:30 a.m., so it doubles as a breakfast-burrito stop.

For a market-counter taco. In South O, Primo Market at 606 Morse St. is a neighborhood grocery with a walk-up taco counter that locals have recommended for years, especially for al pastor and carne asada. Its weekend barbecue and marinated meats to take home get plenty of love too. Its famous bargain taco-day pricing has shifted over the years, so check before you go.

Carlsbad

For handmade tortillas and Baja vibes. Casero Taqueria in the Square at Bressi Ranch (2674 Gateway Rd.) was built around its founders' surf trips to Baja. Expect house-ground corn tortillas, proteins cooked over an open wood flame and a serious tequila and mezcal list. Look for the grilled fish taco with habanero jam or the Yucatán-style cochinita pibil. Swami's Cafe founder Jaime Osuna has since taken over and planned to keep the menu largely the same.

For something a little different. PureTaco on State Street in Carlsbad Village mixes SoCal taco tradition with global flavors. The beer-battered Baja fish taco is the safe bet. The adventurous can go for the pho-inspired beef taco or a global taco flight.

For a taste of local history. Lola's 7 Up Market & Deli at 3292 Roosevelt St. is Carlsbad's oldest family-run business and has served homestyle Mexican food as a deli since 1986. Order the carne asada tacos, the crispy fish tacos or the carne asada fries, and you'll understand why generations keep coming back.

Vista

For handmade tortillas and a taco-first menu. Tacos Don Paco at 800 Civic Center Drive offers carne asada, al pastor, suadero, lengua, fish, shrimp and birria, with handmade tortillas available. Quesabirria fans, this is your stop.

For a sit-down, homestyle meal. Cocina Del Carmen at 1350 E. Vista Way is known for homemade tortillas and traditional family recipes. It's a good pick when the group wants tacos but someone else is eyeing mariscos or a bowl of caldo.

For seafood with your Mexican food. Los Cabos Mexican & Seafood on East Vista Way pairs familiar plates with ceviche, shrimp cocktails and other mariscos.

Questions You May Have About North County Tacos

Where should fish-taco fans start? Sancho's in Oceanside, Casero and PureTaco in Carlsbad, and Lola's all list fish tacos. Casero grills its fish over wood; the others lean beer-battered.

Where can I find handmade tortillas? Casero Taqueria in Carlsbad, plus Tacos Don Paco and Cocina Del Carmen in Vista.

Which spot works for an early start? Valerie's Taco Shop in Oceanside opens for online orders at 6:30 a.m.

Is there a budget-friendly option? Primo Market's taco counter in South Oceanside has long been a local favorite for cheap, no-frills

North County Halloween Safety: A Simple Plan for Family Fun
🔥 Trending

A comfortable Halloween in Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista begins with a clear family plan. Check current public-event announcements and neighborhood arrangements separately.

A park celebration or downtown attraction does not establish hours for every street. Agree on the walking group, the supervising adult, a compact route and the finishing time before children head out. Save a recognizable meeting point and a pickup plan.

Try costumes with the shoes and outer layers children will actually wear.

Safe Kids Worldwide recommends reflective details, lights, properly fitting outfits and adult accompaniment for children younger than 12. Drivers should slow down and watch carefully for pedestrians, following National Highway Traffic Safety Administration guidance. Keep phones away during crossings and allow time for a calm trip home.

At home, give collected treats an adult review.

The Food and Drug Administration recommends a snack or meal before trick-or-treating, checking wrappers and allergy labels afterward, and removing items unsuitable for younger children. Our guide brings these steps into a practical family plan, along with suggestions for comfortable pickups and welcoming visitors at your door. Choose the kind of visit your group wants before buying admission.

Options such as the corn maze, tractor ride and animal encounters have their own prices, and the nighttime haunted maze is a separate experience. Check current hours, inclusions and any bundle carefully. Do not assume a pumpkin purchase or every activity comes with the entry price. Set a total budget so children know which extras are part of the plan.

Our guide offers a gentler way to enjoy the season: pick a few priorities, allow a comfortable pace and let daylight pumpkin fun be the whole outing if that suits your family.

Alta Vista Botanical Gardens in Vista offers North County residents several ways to contribute this fall, from hands-on landscape care to event support and behind-the-scenes help. The nonprofit gardens are at 1270 Vale Terrace Drive.

Volunteer opportunities include weeding, pruning, clearing trails, membership, outreach, photography and other operational tasks. New volunteers should explain their skills, available time and any physical needs to the coordinator.

The Grow Getters program focuses on propagation and potting. Its published schedule describes a free nursery gathering on the first Sunday of the month, 10 a.m.–noon; confirm the upcoming session before traveling.

For a longer commitment, Adopt-a-Garden invites individuals and groups to choose an area and care for it over one year. Volunteers receive plant-specific training, access to tools and flexibility in their working schedule.

The theme invites visitors to consider the many ways a place can feel like home. The city’s call welcomed emerging and established visual artists from the San Diego region; applications are now closed, so the public’s next opportunity is to see the show.

The gallery is in the Carlsbad City Library complex at 1775 Dove Lane. Its familiar community setting makes an art outing easy to combine with a library visit, and free admission leaves room for a short first look or a return trip. Visitors do not need an art-history background to explore the theme or discuss how different works connect with their own experiences.

A public reception is scheduled for November 7, 3–5 p.m. The reception and October 23 opening are separate dates, giving residents two ways to plan their visit.

Listed gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Wednesday, noon–7 p.m.; and Sunday, 1–5 p.m. Check the city’s gallery information before traveling, especially around holidays.

Bring a friend or family member and compare what catches your attention. Read the official exhibition details or call 442-339-2090 with questions.

Kids Free October: North County Museum Adventures

North County families can use Kids Free October to plan nearby museum outings before the promotion ends October 31, 2026. The San Diego Museum Council lists more than 70 participating regional museums and cultural attractions.

Children 12 and younger generally receive free admission with a paid adult, but each location’s coupon sets its own offer and age rules. Special exhibitions and programs can cost extra, and certain attraction passes do not qualify as paid adult admission.

In Oceanside, the California Surf Museum at 312 Pier View Way explores surfing history, boards and artifacts. Its regular hours are 10 a.m.–4 p.m. daily, and children 11 and younger are already free under the museum’s everyday policy.

In Carlsbad, the Museum of Making Music at 5790 Armada Drive combines instrument history with hands-on musical discoveries. It is open Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with free visitor parking.

Choose one destination that fits your family’s interests and leave time to explore instead of rushing through several museums. Asking each child to pick a favorite object can turn the outing into a conversation.

Download the museum coupons, read the specific terms and check current hours before leaving. Show the pass on your phone or bring a printed copy.

Carlsbad Residents Fight to Preserve 11 Acres of Coastal Land

Carlsbad residents are fighting to preserve 11 acres of undeveloped coastal land, raising broader questions about how North County balances growth with open space.

The preservation effort comes as the region also deals with periods of dangerous heat, when access to shade, outdoor space and cooler areas can matter even more to local families.

The parcel’s future remains unresolved, but the debate is giving residents across Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista another reason to consider what kind of North County they want to leave for the next generation.

Vista Opens New Inland Rail Trail Link

Vista residents now have another safe, traffic-separated option for getting around North County with the opening of a new section of the Inland Rail Trail.

The San Diego Association of Governments marked the completion of the latest trail segment on Sept. 26, opening a paved 1.1-mile route between Mar Vista Drive and Civic Center Drive. The celebration coincided with Vista’s Cyclovia event, giving community members an opportunity to explore the new path by bike, on foot and other forms of active transportation.

The project, called Phase 3 of the Inland Rail Trail, connects with existing segments to create approximately 12 uninterrupted miles of pathway away from vehicle traffic. Users can now travel from the Escondido Transit Center through San Marcos and into Vista, reaching the Civic Center Sprinter station without relying on busy roadways.

Built alongside the Sprinter rail corridor, the route includes ADA-accessible features, trail lighting, drought-tolerant landscaping and drainage upgrades. A pocket park and rest area near Mar Vista Drive provides a place for trail users to pause along the way.

Construction began in 2024 and involved challenging terrain, including slopes that rose as much as 25 feet above the adjacent railroad tracks. The $27.9 million project was financed through a combination of federal, state and local funding, including TransNet transportation sales-tax revenue and the California Active Transportation Program.

Regional and local leaders said the project demonstrates the value of cooperation among cities, transit agencies and transportation planners. The trail is designed not only as a recreational amenity, but also as a practical travel route that links neighborhoods, jobs, schools and transit stations.

The new Vista segment advances a broader plan for a 21-mile Inland Rail Trail connecting Escondido, San Marcos, Vista and Oceanside. A remaining two-mile gap between Civic Center Drive and North Drive is in final design. When that work and future segments are completed, North County will have a continuous inland trail corridor stretching from Escondido to Oceanside.
