Carlsbad swimmers have a reason to put their goggles back by the door: Monroe Street Pool is scheduled to reopen Tuesday, November 3, at 6 a.m., following a major renovation and expansion.

The city celebrated completion with an October 29 preview and ribbon-cutting, setting up a welcome return for a community facility that has served residents for more than four decades.

The reopening date is the city’s announced schedule as of this report; check current aquatic information before making a first trip.

More room for a familiar routine

The renovated pool has 50% more lanes, giving the project a practical centerpiece for swimmers who have been waiting to return.

An expanded deck, additional shade and bleacher seating improve the space around the water, while updated locker rooms and new family restrooms address the everyday parts of a pool visit.

The improvements also include outdoor showers, deck lockers, a larger parking lot and upgraded pool equipment.

Solar energy improvements are part of the work, and enclosed frontage along Monroe Street is designed to reduce noise reaching the surrounding neighborhood.

For a parent carrying towels, a swimmer fitting exercise between errands or someone returning after a long break, those supporting spaces can matter as much as the water itself.

One pass for two city pools

The reopening also brings a change to aquatic passes: the city says one overall membership will provide access to both Monroe Street Pool and Alga Norte Aquatic Center.

Existing Alga Norte monthly or quarterly members do not need to take action to gain access to both facilities.

Former Monroe Street Pool monthly or quarterly passholders who want to renew can buy the new combined pass online starting Tuesday or purchase it in person.

Drop-in day passes will be sold in person only.

That makes this a good week to check which purchase route fits your plans before heading out.

A posted opening time is not a promise that every activity runs throughout the day, so confirm the schedule for the specific swim session you want.

A long project reaches its next chapter

Voters authorized up to $24 million for reconstruction and expansion in November 2022, with an inflation adjustment that could have increased the allowable amount.

The city reports completing the project for approximately $21 million.

That figure describes the overall project rather than a new admission price or a promise about future membership rates.

Contractors, lifeguards and administrative staff are using the final days before reopening for training, preparation and finishing touches.

Some work may continue in limited areas afterward, although the city does not expect it to interfere with use of the reopened facility.

The next step is a return to regular use, with current operating information more useful to visitors than construction-era estimates.

Plan a comfortable first visit

Before leaving home, check the city’s aquatics page for the latest schedule, admission information and any reopening notices.

If you already hold a pass, confirm its type rather than assuming an older product has exactly the same terms.

Pack the basics, leave a little extra time to find your way around the updated facility and follow staff directions when you arrive.

Families with questions about access or changing facilities should contact the aquatics team before their visit.

For Carlsbad, the news offers a simple invitation: make room in the week for a familiar public place with a fresh start.

21 million under the 24 million cap is actually a decent result for a city project these days. Not something you see very often.

Good to know about the combined pass. I had a Monroe Street monthly pass before the closure so I guess I need to buy the new one online. Appreciate the heads up.

Went to the ribbon cutting on the 29th and the new deck space is really impressive. So much more room than before.
