What makes a place feel like home: a familiar landscape, the people waiting there, a memory, or something harder to name?

That question is at the heart of Carlsbad’s upcoming 2026 Cannon Biennial Exhibition, a free opportunity for North County residents to encounter local creativity through a subject almost anyone can connect with.

The exhibition, titled everywhere home, opens October 23 at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery and is scheduled to remain on view through January 3, 2027.

For people in Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista looking for a quieter fall outing, the show offers a reason to step into a gallery and consider how different people understand belonging.

A local theme with room for different experiences

The city invited emerging and established visual artists from the San Diego region to engage with the many ways people experience a sense of home.

The application period has closed, so the next step for the public is visiting the exhibition rather than submitting work.

The call welcomed a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, mixed media and fiber arts.

Those were eligible forms of work, rather than a promise that every medium will appear in the finished exhibition.

The open-ended theme makes it possible to approach the show without a technical background in art.

A visitor might begin by noticing a color, material or image that feels familiar, then ask what makes that connection personal.

Another person standing beside the same artwork may recognize something entirely different, which is part of the appeal of visiting together.

A gallery woven into everyday community life

The William D. Cannon Art Gallery is located in the Carlsbad City Library complex at 1775 Dove Lane.

The gallery opened in 1999 and presents visual arts exhibitions and programs intended to connect people with art and with one another.

Its setting gives the exhibition a practical advantage for local residents: an art visit can sit alongside an ordinary library trip rather than require a separate, complicated excursion.

Free admission also makes it easier to try a short visit, return for a second look or bring someone who has never spent much time in galleries.

Carlsbad’s broader arts programming includes school experiences and opportunities for residents to engage with creative work, placing the gallery within a larger community arts setting.

The biennial adds a focused occasion to pay attention to artists working in the region.

Put two dates on the calendar

The exhibition begins Friday, October 23, while the public reception is listed for Saturday, November 7, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Those are separate dates, so readers can choose a regular gallery visit or plan around the reception.

The visitor listing gives gallery hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Check the city’s current gallery information before traveling, particularly around holidays during the exhibition’s fall and winter run.

Questions can be directed to the city’s Cultural Arts team at 442-339-2090.

Bring a question, not an art-history exam

Try choosing one piece that reminds you of a place you know and another that challenges your first idea of home.

Families can invite children to describe what they notice before reading any accompanying explanation.

The most useful takeaway may be a conversation about memories, neighborhoods and the things that make a person feel welcome.

Mark October 23 for the opening, consider the November reception and give a local gallery visit room on your fall calendar.

Love that you can just fold this into a library trip. Parking over there is easy too, which honestly matters more than people admit when deciding whether to go somewhere.

The theme feels a little vague to me. Everywhere home could mean just about anything. Hoping the actual work gives it more shape than the description does.

I live maybe five minutes from Dove Lane and I had no idea this gallery had been there since 1999. A little embarrassing to admit but glad I know now.

Honest question, does anyone know how many artists typically get selected for these? The article says the theme was open to a lot of media but doesn't really say how big the show ends up being.

Took my kids to the last Cannon Biennial and they actually got into it way more than I expected. The free admission is huge for families. Already putting November 7 on the calendar.
