North County families still have time to turn an ordinary October weekend into a museum adventure, with Kids Free October continuing through October 31 and participating destinations close to home in Oceanside and Carlsbad.

The San Diego Museum Council’s 2026 promotion includes more than 70 regional museums and cultural attractions, generally offering free admission for children 12 and younger with a paid adult, although individual offers and age limits vary.

For readers in Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista, the useful part is proximity: a family does not have to plan a full day in central San Diego to explore something new.

Start with the offer, then choose the outing

Before leaving, download the program’s museum coupons and read the terms for the location you want to visit.

The pass can be shown on a phone or printed, and the museum council notes that special exhibitions, programs or films may carry separate charges.

Certain attraction passes do not count as paid adult admission for this promotion, so families should check the actual coupon rather than assume an existing pass qualifies.

That little bit of planning can keep a promising day from starting with a surprise at the ticket counter.

Surf stories in downtown Oceanside

The California Surf Museum, at 312 Pier View Way, connects the coast outside its doors with surfing’s history, equipment and people.

Its visitor information lists daily hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with closures on major holidays, and regular adult admission of $10.

The museum’s everyday policy already admits children 11 and younger free, an important distinction when comparing an October coupon with regular admission.

Exhibits and artifacts offer a different way to experience the beach community: through the boards, ideas and stories that helped shape surf culture.

Families can make the visit into a conversation by asking children what looks different about older boards or how design might change the way a board moves.

No surfing experience is required to be curious about the ocean and the objects people have created to enjoy it.

Music discoveries in Carlsbad

At the Museum of Making Music, 5790 Armada Drive, the focus shifts from waves to instruments and the industry that brings music into everyday life.

The museum describes galleries with historical instruments, audio and video material, and hands-on opportunities to try a variety of instruments.

It lists hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with Mondays closed, and regular general admission of $15.

Parking for museum visitors is free in the lot behind the building.

This is an outing where children can follow a sound or an unfamiliar instrument and let a question guide the next stop.

Adults may find their own point of connection in a familiar musical style, while younger visitors discover how much variety fits under the word music.

Make one visit count

Rather than rushing between several destinations, consider choosing one museum and leaving room for the family to linger.

A useful challenge is to have each person select one favorite object and explain what caught their attention on the way home.

Check current museum hours and the location’s October offer before you travel, especially if a special event is part of your plan.

For families watching their budgets, the savings work best when the admission rules are clear and the outing matches the children’s interests.

Download the coupons, pick a nearby destination and use the remaining weeks of October to see a familiar North County city from a new angle.

Didn't realize kids 11 and under are already free at the Surf Museum. The coupon might not add much for smaller families then. Worth knowing before you go.

$15 general admission at the music museum is a bit steep honestly even with the kids free deal. Wish more of these places had lower base prices year round.

The Museum of Making Music is genuinely underrated. My daughter played a ukulele there for like 20 minutes and we had to drag her out.

Good heads up about checking whether your existing pass counts. I almost made that mistake with our zoo membership last time.

Took my grandkids to the Surf Museum last year and they loved looking at the old longboards. Way cheaper than driving into the city too.
