Oceanside’s fall season has a farm-side option for families who want pumpkins, flowers and an afternoon outside without turning the outing into a long road trip.
Mellano Farm Stand’s Pumpkin & Marigold Harvest Festival continues on October 17–18, October 24–25 and October 31–November 1, with festival hours listed as 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The family-owned working farm at 5714 North River Road combines seasonal activities with a chance to see a different side of a city often associated with beaches and surf.
For residents coming from Carlsbad or Vista, it is an opportunity to trade the usual weekend routine for fields, farm displays and a closer look at where flowers and produce grow.
Choose your own version of a harvest day
The festival advertises pumpkins for purchase, marigold picking, a corn maze, tractor rides, live entertainment, local vendors and food trucks.
Those options can make the outing flexible: one family may be most interested in the maze, while another wants flower-field photographs and time browsing the farm stand.
Activity tickets and purchases are separate decisions, so check the farm’s current price sheet before building a budget.
The organizer lists $5 parking, with the last activity tickets sold and final tractor ride departing at 3:30 p.m.
Arriving with time to spare is a better plan than expecting to fit the main activities into the final few minutes.
The seasonal event graphic provides a starting point, but the farm’s activity-pricing page is the place to confirm the details for the visit you choose.
Leave room for the learning
The harvest program also promotes free educational talks and demonstrations, including worm-bin composting and honey, bees and pollinators.
Free children’s craft activities are listed as another way to take part in the day.
Because weekend programs can change, check the event calendar before promising a particular demonstration or craft to the family.
A farm visit can be a useful opportunity to let children ask ordinary questions: what a plant needs, how a flower is harvested or why bees matter to a growing field.
Adults can approach it with the same curiosity, especially if they are considering a small garden at home.
Pairing an activity with a question gives the afternoon something to carry back beyond a pumpkin or photograph.
Remember that this is a working farm
Mellano describes the grounds as loose dirt or gravel, and its visitor guidance says produce fields are not accessible.
That matters when planning for a wheelchair, stroller or anyone who needs a firm walking surface.
Call the farm about your specific access needs rather than assuming that every advertised activity is equally easy to reach.
Leashed dogs are allowed in the seating and patio area, but pets are not permitted in the farm fields or on the tractor; the farm notes an exception for ADA service animals.
Comfortable footwear, sun protection and drinking water are sensible additions to an outdoor family plan.
A local business with a seasonal rhythm
The farm stand’s regular schedule is Thursday through Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., which differs from the festival’s published hours.
Mellano’s year-round story includes seasonal crops, flowers, produce and educational experiences, so the harvest weekends are one part of an ongoing local operation.
Use the festival schedule for your event day, then check activity prices and any weekend-specific announcements.

The bee and pollinator talk sounds really cool. My daughter is really into bugs and gardens right now so that free demo might honestly be the highlight for us over the pumpkins.
Five dollar parking is fine but I wish the article said more about what the activity tickets actually cost. "Check the price sheet" is a little vague when you are trying to budget for a family of four.
Honestly surprised more people around here don't know this farm exists. Everyone drives to Julian for fall stuff but this is like 20 minutes away.
Good to know about the gravel and dirt paths. We have a stroller and I would have just shown up assuming it was all paved. Calling ahead is smart advice.
Took my kids to Mellano last October and the corn maze alone was worth the trip. Just give yourself more than an hour, we almost missed the tractor because we lost track of time in there.
