Vista’s First Día de Muertos Festival Celebrates Community |
South Santa Fe Avenue fills with music, art and cultural traditions for a new local celebration |

Downtown Vista is preparing for a colorful new community tradition as the city welcomes its inaugural Día de Muertos street festival.
The celebration is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 11, along South Santa Fe Avenue, bringing music, art, food and remembrance into the heart of the community.
Organizers have planned traditional ofrendas, Ballet Folklórico, cultural performances, children’s activities, local vendors and a Catrina contest.
The festival is designed to be more than another weekend event; it gives families a public space to honor loved ones while sharing traditions across generations.
Día de Muertos has deep roots in Mexican culture, blending remembrance with vibrant imagery, music and gatherings centered on those who came before.
For a community as diverse as North County, that combination of reflection and celebration offers an especially natural fit.
The debut also reflects Vista’s continuing effort to make its downtown corridor a place where residents gather rather than simply pass through.
Recent years have brought more markets, festivals, arts programming and community events to the area.
The Día de Muertos celebration adds a distinctive cultural event to that calendar and gives local artists, performers and businesses another chance to connect with residents.
Vista’s inaugural festival is free to attend, making it an accessible Sunday outing for families from Oceanside, Carlsbad and throughout North County. |

Good to see downtown getting more of this kind of programming. The weekend markets have been hit or miss but the cultural events always draw a solid crowd.
Took my kids to one of these up in LA a few years ago and they still talk about the Catrinas. So glad we do not have to drive that far anymore.
Oct 11 seems early for a Día de Muertos event. The holiday is Nov 1 and 2. Just a little odd to move it up that far but I guess they had to work around other events on the calendar.
Free admission is the right call. South Santa Fe is perfect for this kind of thing. Hope they close off enough of the street so it actually feels like a real festival.
Finally! Been waiting for something like this in Vista. My abuela used to make the most beautiful ofrendas and it means a lot to see this celebrated downtown.
