North County's Halloween season does not have to end at a haunted house door. The Camp Store in Carlsbad offers a seasonal light-and-music display in a coastal setting, giving residents another way to spend an October evening. It is a good topic for a family conversation about what kind of Halloween outing everyone actually enjoys.

The Camp Store’s October 2026 calendar lists Halloween lights through October 31, generally at 6:30 p.m., with 6 p.m. starts on October 19, 20, 26 and 27. The venue is at 7201 Carlsbad Boulevard. Visit Carlsbad’s event page gives a general 6:30 p.m. nightly listing; use the venue’s date-specific calendar when planning your visit. The venue's own information places it at South Carlsbad State Beach and describes its food, music and light-show offerings.

The Camp Store says it is open to the public and that a reservation is not required to visit. Limited table and firepit reservations are separate arrangements. Confirm the current show schedule, viewing arrangements, access and any parking costs directly before traveling; do not assume a reserved table is included with a casual visit.

Let the lights be enough

Choose a relaxed arrival plan rather than fitting the show between several other commitments. A few minutes to settle in can make a difference for children who have spent the day anticipating an outing. Agree on a comfortable finishing point before the evening starts.

Ask children what they notice in the colors and music. A favorite moment can become the subject of a drawing or a conversation on the way home. There is no need to capture the whole display on a phone for the visit to feel memorable.

A short seasonal outing can still feel special. Families do not need to add a haunted attraction afterward or make an elaborate dinner plan. The best version of the evening is the one that fits the people who came.

Separate the show from optional purchases

If you plan to eat at the venue, check its current kitchen hours and menu before deciding when to arrive. The venue distinguishes store hours, restaurant service and reservations, so one advertised opening time should not be used to infer that every service is available.

Set a spending limit if food or drinks are part of your plan. Explain that choice to children before arriving rather than negotiating it when everyone is hungry. A little clarity can keep a simple display visit from becoming a more complicated evening than intended.

Keep the coastal setting in mind

Choose comfortable shoes and bring whatever layer makes an evening outdoors pleasant for your group. Ask about access needs directly if the route to the viewing area or available seating will determine whether the outing works. Give yourself time to find the venue without rushing.

Be considerate when photographing the display. Leave others a clear view, avoid blocking movement and keep children beside their accompanying adult. If your group arrives separately, agree on a recognizable meeting point that does not obstruct other visitors.

Check the venue and current event listing before you leave. Confirm the night's arrangements and keep the rest of the schedule flexible. A little Halloween music, a changing display and a familiar stretch of Carlsbad coast can provide a satisfying seasonal evening without asking everyone to enjoy the same kind of scare.

Before adding an activity to a shared calendar, send everyone the same organizer link. That helps relatives compare the same information and makes a later change easier to communicate. Decide who will check for updates on the day, then keep the plan flexible enough to fit the people actually coming along.

I appreciate that someone finally wrote something Halloween-related that is not about a haunted house. My youngest gets scared easily and this sounds like a perfect fit for us.

Claudia R.Same situation with my kid. We tried a haunted house last year and it was a disaster, spent the whole time in the parking lot. Something like this with lights and music sounds way more our speed.

Honestly the parking situation on Carlsbad Blvd on a weekend evening can be rough. Give yourself extra time especially if you are coming from inland. Not trying to be negative just speaking from experience.

Completely fair point, and it's exactly why the article suggests giving yourself time to find the venue without rushing, arriving with a buffer built in makes the whole evening feel more relaxed, especially on a busy October weekend.

The firepit tables look great in photos but I called once before and they were fully booked for weeks. Worth checking early if that is what you are hoping for.

Good to know a reservation is not required. I always assume these things need a ticket and end up not going. Might actually swing by this week.

Went here last weekend with my kids and it was really nice. Not too crowded, the lights were fun and my daughter kept asking me to point out her favorite colors. Way more relaxed than a haunted house.
