Every November 11, Americans honor the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces.

In 2026, Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 108 years after the armistice that ended fighting in World War I.

Across Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista, the occasion has special meaning for veterans, military families and neighbors who appreciate their service.

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, remembering the ceasefire that took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918.

President Woodrow Wilson called for the first Armistice Day observance in 1919, inviting Americans to reflect on sacrifice and peace.

Congress made November 11 a federal holiday in 1938, originally commemorating the veterans of World War I.

After World War II and the Korean War, the holiday's purpose expanded to recognize Americans who served in every era.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation changing its name to Veterans Day.

The observance temporarily moved to October in the 1970s, but returned permanently to November 11 beginning in 1978.

Veterans Day honors all military veterans, including those who served in wartime and peacetime.

Memorial Day, by contrast, specifically honors military personnel who died while serving.

The distinction matters because Veterans Day is an opportunity to thank living veterans while remembering the dedication of everyone who wore the uniform.

Military service often means extended separation from family, challenging assignments and a commitment to responsibilities larger than oneself.

Many veterans continue serving their communities long after their military careers end, becoming teachers, volunteers, business owners and civic leaders.

North County San Diego has particularly close ties to the military.

Oceanside neighbors Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, whose Marines and families have helped shape the region for generations.

The Veterans Association of North County in Oceanside provides a gathering place and support connections for veterans and their families.

In Carlsbad, the city's planned Veterans Memorial Park will create a lasting place to reflect on military service.

Vista's local veterans groups and community ceremonies also help keep the tradition of recognition alive.

These connections make Veterans Day more than a date on the calendar.

Residents can mark the day by attending a ceremony, thanking a veteran, supporting veteran-owned businesses or volunteering with organizations serving military families.

Children can participate by listening to veterans' stories and learning why service and civic responsibility matter.

A sincere conversation can be as meaningful as a formal tribute.

As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, the holiday is a reminder that generations have defended the country's freedoms.

To every veteran in Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista and beyond: thank you for your service.
